Top 7 Reasons Why We Feel Tired and Sleepy After a Great Meal

You’ve just indulged in the meal of a lifetime, and a short while later you feel sleepy. Your eyelids dip, and the fact that you are checking out mattresses on random websites is not helping either. Does that ring a bell?

It’s all right when you are at home in the evening and moderately close to bedtime, but what about when you are still at work, or you have to go and pick the kids up from ballet or soccer practice? Drowsiness doesn’t quite fit into your plans then.

Don’t worry it’s perfectly normal. This sense of tiredness does not necessarily have to do with the fact that we have eaten all the wrong things. It’s a natural process that needs to be explained.    

Even though all of us have experienced this food-induced tiredness at some point in our lives, many of us do not know what happens in our bodies. Hopefully, after having read this article, you will be far wiser and able to understand what’s going on.

The seven main reasons why we feel tired and sleepy after a great meal.

1.      The primary cause of post-meal fatigue lies in the digestive system. It may come as a surprise to you that the peptic process takes rather a lot of energy to complete. To survive, we need to consume foodstuffs to obtain the energy therein. The next stage involves the breaking down of the food into so-called fuel and glucose; the resulting macronutrients are then transformed into energy-giving calories.  

2.      Linking up to the previous point, large portions of chiefly fatty food can leave you feeling especially sluggish. This is because the body has to work even harder to conduct the digestive process of turning the food into energy.      

3.      Sugary foods trigger the ‘happy’ and ‘sleep’ hormones in our body, which are stimulated by the increase in insulin production. The increased amount of insulin in the bloodstream has the knock-on effect of causing changes in the brain, leading to more melatonin and serotonin creation. These two neurotransmitters have a calming effect; ergo you will start to feel sleepy.     

4.      You may be allergic or not able to tolerate certain foods. This is not the all-out respiratory attack or the spread of a rash we are talking about but the sneaky culprits that come through the back door – no pun intended when you read the next bit. If you notice that you are having digestive problems such as diarrhea, bloating, indigestion or gas, then you should abstain from such foods.

As already mentioned, the body uses a lot of energy during the digestive process, and the aforementioned needs, even more, making you feel sluggish.      

5.      Ever thought why that bowl of tasty pasta almost knocked you out? It’s because of the carbs. Carbohydrates get our old friend from before all worked up – the neurotransmitter serotonin that also boosts our mood can have the effect of making you feel so relaxed that you will want to go to sleep.

6.      Foods that are high in protein tend to make us drowsier than others. Think of Thanksgiving when you ate that incredible turkey dinner. Did you feel like running a marathon after that? Heck, no. Turkey like cheese, tofu, fish, and spinach are all high protein foods that contain high levels of tryptophan.

7.      The last point is a little more morbid than the rest. If you constantly feel excessively tired after a meal and it lasts throughout the day, it is wise to seek out a healthcare professional because you might suffer from something more serious. In this category, we already mentioned being intolerant to certain foods. But you may also lack certain nutrients that your digestive system is not able to source. A doctor will be able to clarify that for you.

All in all, there are few things more enjoyable than feeling pleasantly sated after a good meal. The nineteenth-century French foreign minister, Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, once said, ‘Show me another pleasure like dinner which comes every day and lasts an hour.’
